The NBCCC is saddened to hear of the passing of former player and coach Barry Tobias on Wednesday.

From the ECA Website:

ROBERT ‘BARRIE’ TOBIAS
Born 1st August 1937 Died 13th August 2014

Barrie Tobias started his long association with the East Suburban Churches Cricket Association at senior level in 1952 with East Kew Presbyterian Cricket Club ,having
played in the junior ranks prior. In 1978 his club merged with Glen Iris Methodist
then know at GIEK Cricket Club. Then in 1986, he played at St Barnabas until he
decided the rigours of playing caught up with the body and the obvious next thing
to remain in the game was to take up umpiring, which he did with distinction.
Ill health took him away from this and watching matches and attending functions.

Barrie’s playing record was magnificent scoring 13813 runs with 26 centuries and 60
half centuries. He was a handy bowler and took 187 wickets and an excellent fieldsman.
A ”Team of the Century” was selected in 2002 and was one of the first players named.

Barrie started his long administrative journey in 1983 as an Executive Member.
In 1987 he took on the role of Executive Chairman. In 1989 he occupied the dual
role on President and Chairman until 1997. He also had a stint as Assistant Treasurer 1976
to 1985 and Treasurer 1981-83. He was awarded Life Membership in 1982 and The Australian Sports Medal in 2000.

The ESD&CCA merged in 1999 with Eastern Suburbs Cricket Association and Barrie along
with Kevin Noy and Brian Barnard worked tirelessly on the working party which was formed to work through the many issues that needed to be addressed for the formation
of the now Eastern Cricket Association. Barrie was also a Patron of the ECA.

Barrie was a truly great person and servant to the wonderful game of cricket.

The funeral is to be held at Le Pines Box Hill, at 2:30 PM this Monday, the 18th of August.
