Round 10 Summary

December 10, 2017

First XI defeated North Balwyn CC

The Ones played at home in the battle of the postcode v North Balwyn CC.  Will won the toss and elected to bat, opening with Lozza and Gazza.  Loz was dropped first ball of the day, but Gaz wasn’t so lucky being caught for a rare duck.  A rare duck… reminds me that an uncooked turkey can bring salmonella poisoning to loved ones.  1 for 0.  Enter Kavan who started carving them up.  Lozza continued his luck with the bat, being dropped twice on his way to 39, including a cover drive for 6!  To quote Lozza, “The best shot hit on Panther Park is going to get overshadowed by Kavan’s ton”.  Worms was batting well before his knee didn’t move with his body and strained his knee, retired hurt.  The club is looking into a deal with the Scouts next door to practise for their First Aid badge when Worms is playing.  Kavan showed complete class, scoring his maiden century, 100 on the dot, first Panther ton at Panther Park.  His swashbuckling innings came to end whilst swinging for the extra runs at the end of our innings.  Stiffler was out there for brief cameo appearance before forgetting to offer any type of shot to a ball on the stumps.  Will and Ben saw us through to the end, setting them 213 for the win.

Wilbur opened with Stiffler and the Hulk, Stiffler claiming both openers within the first five overs.  Great partnership bowling with the Hulk who was accurate, getting better each week, managed to get himself another one this week.  3 of the top 4 batsmen now out, 3 for 44 before the change, the Naveens.  Both bowled really well, Naveen M on a hat trick at one stage and both taking 2 wickets each before young Benny Blackman came on for his first wicket in the ones.  Wickets evenly shared by all bowlers in the end, all due to great partnership bowling and tying up both ends.  The highlight in the field has to be Gazza’s run out.  He’s run out to backward square leg and in one motion, with one stump to look at has hit the stumps and hard.  The boys were celebrating in the middle while Gaz was off doing a lap of honour around the ground.  In the end, a 92-run win sees the Ones comfortably in third after a comprehensive victory over fourth place Bulls.

Second XI defeated Glen Waverley CC

The Magoos, appropriately named with the average age being well into their 40’s travelled out to Glen Waverley on Sunday for their Round 10 clash.  As we were reminded, this was the home of our Treasurer as he pointed himself out on their Honour Board; so glad he was on our side today.  Lost the toss and sent out to field.  Opened with the colours: Green and Black(man).  They were way too good.  Greeny opened with a fiery maiden, but it was Blacky who snagged the first of the day, comfortably caught by Boothy at point, 1 for 1.  Greeny got touched up in his second over, going for 5 runs before Blacky snagged his second wicket in his second over, was this Blacky’s day?  His boys had been bagging him about being dropped to the twos and for not taking any wickets.  Greeny finally got his first in his third and his second in his last while Black continued to bamboozle their batsmen, finishing with a 4fa.  Made the change, brought on Martie and Wolfy.  Martie was tight, bowling stump to stump and claiming his 2 wickets through bowled, and on a hat trick with the ball being again full and on the stumps.  Wolfy on the other hand, came off 4 steps and to everyone’s amazement, no extras at all!  That’s right, the pitch was narrow and he managed to bowl straight.  Mind you, there were glimpses, like when he picked up the ball at fine leg and sprinted 10m towards the non-striker who was out of his crease to intimidate.  Managed to also hit a 13 year old on the hand and not give him a spray, who is this new Wolfy?  Speedy bowled what ended up being the last over, with a run out Wolf/Speed.  Their only boundary coming off Martie, which was chased by Grady who clicked into second gear when he noticed it slowing up, but not enough.  Excellent bowling and fielding by the boys to keep them to 47.

Sent Boothy and Bobby out to start our chase.  Bobby was retaining the strike on his way to 28, as Boothy was bowled for 2 early on.  Bobby at times looked to be playing tennis with one handed shots around the park, however that came undone when he let the bat go and it went further than most shots.  Brentons pushed them around for his 7*, whilst Bobby was dismissed with 5 runs to win.  Enter Knotty, strike rate 400% to end the game first ball of the 12th over.  Another great win by the boys now sees the twos 1 point out of the four, with a very handy percentage.

The injury that kept Craig Miles out this week. The club wishes Craig all the best in his recovery and hope that he will return soon.

Reminder for next weeks function…
