Round 1 summary

October 16, 2017

Ones
With Club Captain Will McKenzie out this week after injuring himself, the reigns went to James Grady.  Grades lost the toss and we were out on the park fielding. East Doncaster took their chances with the early season jitters in the field, dropping catches until one opening batsmen retired hurt. Bring in number 3 and back he went. Wolfy was not going to make the same mistake, taking a caught and bowled to the number 3’s first ball; 2 (technically 1) for 29. Then 3 for 31, 4 for 67… looking good. Then the partnership that made it tougher, 111 before broken by Captain Grades with the assistance of Knotty taking a magnificent catch, but very comfortably. We kept it tight with Speedy bowling 7 overs on the trot at the death.  Special mention to Kavan’s first game for the club and was flawless in the field. Worms was great with the ball and Gaz was superb with the gloves. EDCC 5 for 200 after their 40.
After his spell, Speedy opened the batting with Knotty. Got off to a tough start with accurate bowling and strong fielding by EDCC. Speedy hit his third career 6 on his way to 14. Speedy caught, come in Kavan who looked very nice with the bat. First four partnerships all worth around 30 each but up against a bowling attack that bowled to their field making the chase slower than required. We just could not get the bad balls away. Eventually we were bowled out 46 runs short.
Next week we take on Marcellin OC away.
Twos
Had no game as it was on Sunday and clashed with vets.
Vets
Our first ECA vets game saw us play Salesian OC at home. The vets are captained by Martie this year, winning the toss and electing to bat.  He opened the account with Tony and Boothy, a good start 1 for 33. Govey and Stu McKenzie came together for the third wicket partnership of 50 to steady the ship. Enter Treasurer Green, who batted with the tail making a well compiled 37*. A special mention to Wolfy playing his second game for the weekend and welcome back to the club Jim Forsyth who looked as comfortable as the day he left the middle. 9 for 159 after our 36 overs. Was this enough?
Not quite. It did take Salesian a bit of time to pass us, 28 overs but they batted within themselves, including to the Tony Miles moon balls. Tony’s son, Craig lost his radar, bowling 5 consecutive balls outside a left handers off stump; pity he was bowling to a right handed batsmen. Dicko’s wise advice from the peanut gallery saw Junior go around the wicket and then dragged. Martie took one of the most juggled catches ever, but routine for Martie. Greeny and Wolfy were handy with the ball. Bad luck vets. Better luck in two weeks v Clifton Hill away.
